During my 7th and 8th grade years at Wayside Middle School (Ft. Worth) my creativity really began to flourish. I was thrilled with my art class, doing India-ink abstracts, sand sculptures, carving objects out of plaster, silk-screening, etc. - and even doing extra credit projects, simply because I loved art so much. But surprisingly one of my most creative efforts was not in art class, but English. Yes, boring English class!
My English teacher gave us a creative writing assignment - showing us a picture of a man on a window-washer type of scaffolding, who appeared to be painting the side of a building. She instructed us to create a story behind the photo, of at least one page.
Well, my imagination went wild... I started writing a story about the famous "Jolly Green Giant" on TV. People didn't realize that he was actually a big lover of art! But that was the problem! He was so big, and all of the art was so small! He wanted so much to have a painting that was big enough for him to enjoy. So the picture was actually a painter working on a giant version of the Mona Lisa!
I went crazy with all sorts of related content, describing the life of the "Jolly Green Giant" that no one knew...how he felt alone because people were afraid of him...how he felt so disconnected because he was so different in appearance from everyone else... Before I knew it my story was 20 pages long! My teacher was stunned at how prolific this young man was!
That was 1968... A long time ago... My art teacher, Ms. Spearman cried when I told her we were moving. I wish so much that I could tell her now that she made a big difference in my life - fanning a spark of creativity into a flame that still burns bright... :)
